A loan of $250 helped to clean his fields and plant coffee.

Alberto's story

Alberto, 65, has been producing cafe for more than 50 years, since it's the primary product in the area where he lives. He started with his father who also grew coffee and who taught him everything he needed to know to be independent and live off of coffee.

Alberto is married to Angeles and they have 4 children who are married but still help him in the coffee fields since it is a family business and their main source of income. During harvest time they contract laborers to help them with the cutting because there's too much work for them to do alone, and this way they contribute financially to the families of the people they hire. In the last harvest, Alberto and his children produced 8 tons of coffee, all of which they turned over to the "Union Regional de Huatusco" to be processed and exported.

For the next harvest, Alberto asks for a loan because he needs to clean and plant his fields. Within a year he plans to buy another hectare of land so that he can increase his production and his estate. Another thing that Alberto would like to buy is a vehicle to transport his coffee. Previously he hasn't done it because the entrance to his land is in very bad shape and it was impossible for the trucks to get in, but now it has been fixed.
