A loan of $925 helped to buy coffee plants and renovate his farm.

Efrén's story

Efrén has been growing coffee for more than fifty years. Like most producers, he learned everything he knows from his father, who also grew coffee. When Efrén married, his father gave him a plot that he could work independently to provide for his new family. Efrén does most of the farmwork himself. Sometimes he hires people to help him with the most arduous tasks because he is now 72 years old, and at this age he finds some of the work too difficult.

Though his wife died several years ago, he has not lost heart and is very enthusiastic about obtaining a Kiva loan to increase his coffee production, which is completely organic. Efrén wants to buy coffee plants to replace the plants on part of his land that are no longer productive. After the harvest, Efrén would like to buy a truck to transport his coffee and to just take for a drive.
