A loan of $1,500 helped to buy alfalfa seeds, chicks, guinea pigs and pigs.

María Martha's story

María has been a member of the “14 de Agosto” communal bank for ten years. She lives in Zhidmad Parish in Cuenca. Its topography is quite fractured which gives it picturesque scenery. Its people are proud to retain their culture and traditions. They work in agriculture, animal husbandry and many of them have various jobs in the city.

María, 49, is married and has four children. Three of them are already married and live on their own; her youngest daughter attends school in the city and her husband works in construction. The house she lives in is her property.

María is a very enterprising person who has several occupations. One of them is agriculture and what she grows is for home consumption. She also works as a day laborer in the fields when she’s asked to and also works raising cattle, guinea pigs, chickens and pigs that she sells in her community. In addition she sells frozen treats on weekends.

She will use her loan to buy alfalfa seeds to improve her pasture land and will also buy guinea pigs, chicks and pigs to continue growing in this business.
