A loan of $400 helped to buy natural fertilizers to scatter among her potato plantings.

Maria's story

María is 44, and married to Demetrio, with whom she has five children. But now she only lives with two of them: Rosmery and Melisa, whom she takes care of in the house she bought 25 years ago.

Thanks to her parents' legacy, she managed to obtain the farmland where she now grows potatoes, lima beans and peas, which she looks after with much care.

"If we don't fertilize, and take out weeds that grow among the furrows, we can have poor quality crops, and we would not recover our investment," she says.

That is why María devotes a great deal of time to looking after her crops. As well, she raises cows, from which she obtains several litres of milk that she sells to a well-known processing company. With the money she gets, she is able to meet the household expenses and have a regular source of working capital for farming.

She belongs to the “Central Checche” solidarity group, and this is her first loan with MFP, so she hopes to continue with this financial support. She likes working in her group, where each day she learns new things about her business. As well, she promises to make her instalment payments on time.

María will use the money to buy natural fertilizers to scatter among her potato plantings.
