A loan of $300 helped to buy raw materials to manufacture new designs of sandals and purses.

Nellys's story

Nellys, 38, is the mother of two children who are 17 and 8 years old. She dreams with seeing them become successful people in the future which is why she works hard every day. She has a small workshop where she manufactures purses and sandals artisanally, an activity she learned and that has served as her source of income because as a female head of household she is responsible for her children’s wellbeing. Her goal is to have a great firm and is gradually preparing for it because her great dream is one of prosperity. She manufactures her products out of faux leather and Naugahyde, among others. Her customers are in Barranquilla and Cartagena and place regular orders that she sometimes is unable to fill because her challenge is lack of working capital that keeps her from being able to meet demand. She has five years’ experience when she took on the responsibility for her home by herself. She currently sells via her own catalogue which is how orders are placed; she sells on credit. Today, she’s approached Fundación Mario Santo Domingo to request a Kiva loan to buy raw materials and supplies to manufacture new designs of sandals and purses that suppliers in the city of Barranquilla have ordered from her as well as from some of her neighbors who are her main promoters.
