A loan of $1,450 helped a member to pay for plowing and to purchase farm inputs and seeds.

Colomba 1 Group's story

The ten members of the group "COLOMBA 1" are married women averaging 43 years of age and four children living for the most part in polygamous families in KOULIBALIBOUGOU, a village in Commune de KABOILA, in the prefecture of SIKASSO (3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The women are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their farm work during the rainy season. They are on their second loan with the institution. The past loan was indeed paid back.

The crop grown is ginger, as is the case with MAIMOUNATA, who is standing first from the left in the photo. With her loan, she intends to pay for plowing and to purchase farm inputs and seeds to maintain 2 hectares.

After the harvest, the produce is sold in the village and at the SIKASSO market to a customer base composed of men and women. MAIMOUNATA plans on making an average profit of 400,000 francs CFA per planting. This profit will enable her to repay her loan and also to help her husband with day-to-day expenses.

She would like to maintain this collaboration with Soro Yiriwaso in order to farm a still larger plot of land, so as to derive more profit.
