Kellen is a farmer in the Nkubu area of Central Kenya. She is a widow with five adult children and has twenty years in active farming with milk, maize and fruits being her main produce. She runs her farm with the help of one farmhand.
Kellen has requested a loan of 30,000 Kenyan Shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry. She says more income year round from the non-seasonal poultry business will help her improve the family's living standards. She is also focusing on buying more parcels of land.
Kellen says rampant crop failure and inadequate rains have informed her decision to start poultry farming so as to secure her future.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
