A loan of $1,575 helped to buy sugar, plastic bottles and soybeans.

Carmen Alfredina's story

Carmen and her husband sell soy milk. They have been in the business for several years, so they have an excellent clientele.

She is the one who prepares the recipe; the process is not complicated but it is a bit long.

Soy is a hairy pod that grows in groups of 3-5; each pod is 3-8 cm long, and usually contains 2-4 seeds, 5-11 mm in diameter, which is shelled for sale.

The preparation is as follows: soak the soybeans overnight; then throw out the water and put the soaked soybeans in a bowl; then boil it in a pot for 5-10 minutes until it is cooked; strain away the water; blend it; add one litre or more of previously boiled cold water; strain it with a fine sieve; bring it to a boil again, and the milk is ready.

Sometimes you leave the milk to boil for five minutes more, adding to it vanilla extract, sugar or unrefined brown sugar; then you leave it to cool for bottling.

The bottles are sold in several product presentations, which have different prices.

The loan she is applying for is to buy sugar, plastic bottles, and soybeans by the quintal (50 kg). She hopes to someday become a distributor of soy milk, with the aim of improving her quality of life.
