Eliana Del Carmen

A loan of $625 helped to purchase merchandise such as women's dresses, children's clothing, and men's pants.

Eliana Del Carmen's story

Eliana is 31 years old and lives with her partner and their 9 year old son in the city of Cartagena de Indias. The city has developed its urban area, conserved its historic district, and become one of the most important ports in Colombia, the Caribbean, and the world, as well as becoming a celebrated tourist destination.

There in the sunny atmosphere of beaches, breeze, and sea, Eliana works as a merchant. About six years ago, she began working as an employee at a clothing store and a year ago, she opened her own clothing store selling women's, men's, and children's clothing. She has slowly grown the business, building a loyal customer base who pay in cash and improve her offerings. Every day her customers increase and she has many challenges such as offering better prices than her competition to stay in the market, but her working capital is not sufficient to make purchases in large volumes, which would allow her to get special discounts which would translate to sale prices and sustain loyal customers.

This has led her to request a Kiva loan to purchase merchandise such as women's dresses, children's clothing, and men's pants. With this investment, she will increase her potential for sales and generate an increase in her working capital, which is what Eliana needs most and would be a success of this Kiva loan.
