A loan of $1,850 helped to buy an air conditioner and to stock up on fabrics that are in style.

Emilia's story

Emilia, 51, owns a dressmaking workshop where she generates income for her household. She has a 17 year-old son who is the motivation for her life, and she dreams of seeing him become a successful professional. It is for him that she puts forth her maximum efforts. Emilia produces garments for women. In her business she has a number of industrial sewing machines and she usually has 1 or 2 employees. She also has a small store where she displays the clothing that she makes. She makes her garments tailored to order, and also by sizes, with exceptional quality. She learned this trade 30 years ago following in the footsteps of her mother, who used to practice this art.

In her store, Emilia wants to offer more comfort to her customers, and this is the reason why she is requesting a Kiva loan. She will use the loan to buy an air conditioner, and she will also stock up on fabrics that are in style, making new designs that will sell well to young people, which is her goal with this investment. For the future, her goal is to continue to expand her workshop and position her brand. Her main challenge is the competition from imported clothing which flows into the city. But she responds to this situation by offering personalized one-on-one attention to her customers. This takes more work, but this way she can expand her individual sales and maintain her customer base.
