A loan of $400 helped to buy a gas stove.

Maria Cristina's story

María, 53, lives in the city of Ica, a city noted for its hot, welcoming climate. Agriculture, especially the growing of cotton, grapes and asparagus, among others, is also common here.

María lives with her husband and she has two children who are adults now and for whom she strives to provide with a proper life. When she has free time available she likes to read very much and also sometimes enjoys eating one of her favorite dishes, the very delicious “Seco de Pollo.” Due to her family’s limited economic resources she was only able to go to 11th grade but would have liked to have studied to become a secretary.

María works day to day in her small business selling ‘chocotejas’ [traditional chocolate candies from Ica]. She works around 8 hours daily and is able to help her husband cover household expenses with what she earns from her work. She believes she does well in her business because she makes tasty items and tends to her customers with kindness

María is very grateful to Kiva lenders because thanks to the help they’ve given her she will be able to buy a gas stove. The one she uses at present burns kerosene so she will be able to make her products in a better way and she will have the necessary tools to continue working towards making her greatest dream a reality: to have a chocoteja company.
