A loan of $1,700 helped to buy underwear, cosmetics, costume jewelry, creams, lotions, deodorant, and clothing.

Lucy's story

Lucy, 49, is a merchant; she has six years’ experience selling cosmetics like creams, lotions, deodorants and she also sells underwear via specialized catalogues. The business was recommended to her by a girlfriend who also was in this type of business.

Lucy distributes her products after having carried out a pre-sale which is when she takes all her customer orders and places her orders by phone. Her main buyers are her neighbors and people referred by them. She sells on credit and sometimes for cash. Her work schedule starts very early and ends 8 hours later and during breaks she does her housework.

She is currently applying for a Kiva loan, her first financing with Fundación Mario Santo Domingo that she’ll use to buy underwear, cosmetics, costume jewelry, creams, lotions, deodorant and underwear that is in her catalogue with special promotional prices; she wants to surprise her customers with them who will be very happy to learn that their favorite products can be purchased for prices they can afford.

Her goal for later on is to expand the business with a more varied inventory of products purchased at good prices which is precisely what she will be able to do when she has the money in hand from her Kiva loan and will be able to choose more options.
