A loan of $400 helped to buy two sacks of pea seeds.

Mercedes's story

Mercedes, 45, has seven children but currently only lives with two of them: José Armando and Jorge Luis who she cares for in the house she rented 12 years ago.

When she formed her family (12 years ago) she started planting on her mother-in-law’s land located an hour away from the city. She grows various crops there like peas, olluco [Andean tuber], potato, oca [tuber], that she tends to every weekend because on the rest of the days she works on a ranch milking cows; she’s paid a monthly salary that helps with household expenses. But Mercedes wants to improve her crops because she gets good profits from the sale of her products and she wants to increase them.

She belongs to the “Nuevo Amanecer” (New Dawn) communal bank and this is her 5th MFP loan. In all this time (more than 2 years) with this institution, she’s gotten the necessary money to invest in her activity which is why she promises to be punctual with her installment payments. She likes being part of her group because all the people are responsible. Mercedes will use the money this time to buy two sacks of pea seeds for this season.
