Dolores Miladis's story

The 1 de Deciembre (December 1st) Communal Bank meets every fifteen days in the seaside resort town of San Clemente, in the canton of Sucre. The community is well known for its beautiful beaches, and is a popular destination for domestic and foreign tourists alike. The community offers a variety of beautiful sights and a rich selection of foods that are typical of the region.

Dolores is one of the residents of this community. She is 54 years old, is in a common-law marriage, and has three children, ages 25, 19, and 15; her two oldest children are in university, while her youngest child is in high school. Her husband works as a laborer.

Dolores is a homemaker who installed a snack bar in her house in order to help her husband support the family and cover the household expenses. She sells sandwiches and fast food, along with soft drinks, bottled water, juices, and other items. She works every day from 3:00 in the afternoon until 9:00 at night. The upcoming season is very good for business, since lots of tourists from the mountains will come to San Clemente to spend their vacations. This is the time of year when Dolores makes the most sales, and that is why she urgently needs a loan so she can restock her business.

Dolores is going to use the loan to purchase soft drinks, bottled water, juices, and supplies for food preparation. She has been a member of her communal bank for 7 years, and enjoys being a member because the loans allowed her to set up her business, which has made a big difference; she also enjoys the unity among the members of the bank.

Dolores’s dream is to have a large restaurant.
