A loan helped to buy compost and fertilizers.

Mario Felipe's story

Mario, 56, lives in the city of Ocoña which is characterized by agricultural development, especially rice, beans, corn and other things. It is also known for the diversity of its food, and in particular for one of its typical dishes, the delicious "chupe de camarones" [shrimp chowder]. Mario is a father of two grown children who have been his greatest motivation for getting ahead, along with his wife who is his right-hand woman and, above all, his greatest support. When he has free time he likes to watch television, especially comedy shows, and to eat one of his favorite dishes "arroz chaufa" [Peruvian fried rice]. Due to his limited economic resources he only went to some secondary courses, but he would have liked to finish school.

Day to day Mario works as a farmer on his small piece of land. He works about 10 hours a day because he's always tending to his crop and above all because he likes to be in the field. He thinks his small business is going well because of his desire to get ahead.

Mario is very grateful to the Kiva lenders because thanks to their help he will be able to buy compost and fertilizers for his crop so that he will have a good harvest and a crop free of pests, which will improve his income so that he can keep fighting every day to realize his greatest dream: "to have a better quality of life and be a better farmer."
