Francis is a resident of Murang’a in Central Kenya where he lives with his family of three children all aged below eighteen years. He has been in farming since his teenage years and currently produces mainly tea, milk and maize for the local market.
Francis has requested a loan of 35,000 Kenyan shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to buy farm inputs and specifically fertilizer to boost both his tea and horticultural farming. He says this will boost his farm produce and enable him to earn income to pay for the education of his children.
He laments of poor weather conditions. He, however, appreciates Juhudi Kilimo's support to smallholder farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
