A loan helped to buy raw materials to make brooms.

Victor Hugo's story

Hugo lives with his wife and son in Santo Domingo. Both Hugo and his wife, Nancy, are 19-years-old and work manufacturing brooms, an occupation they learned from their parents.

Santo Domingo is a large, important city in Ecuador due to its geographic position. Being located between the Ecuadorean coast and mountains, it’s a main center of commerce and tourism, two of the main factors that have thrust its development. However, Santo Domingo’s main industry is neither commerce nor tourism but rather agriculture. In addition to this, Santo Domingo is widely known as a cultural center where various ethnic groups from all over Ecuador and even from outside have come together and blended.

From this beautiful city Hugo and Nancy arise. Hugo works on average 8 hours daily and considers the most complicated part of his work to be the trips he must constantly take throughout the country to acquire his supplies and to sell his brooms. Hugo’s dream is to build his own house for him and his family and considers that his business has arrived at the point where he can invest more in order to earn higher income. To reach his dream, Hugo depends to a large extent on this first Kiva loan.
