A loan of $775 helped to buy 20 bags of natural fertilizer, which cost an average of 100 nuevos soles each.

Jiovana's story

Jiovana is 35 years old and has five children with her husband Isidro. They live in the house that they bought six years ago. She is a farmer, and does not yet have her own land. For this reason she rents land annually, and to take full advantage of this she plants twice per year. Occasionally she works with other farmers. These other farmers prepare the land, and she sows the seeds and adds the fertilizer. They then share the profits from the harvest. Her main crops are corn, potatoes and peas. She only has two years of experience; she says "in this period I learned a lot, above all to be careful, since I broke my leg while I was harvesting potatoes on a hillside. I had to sell a cow." She is very happy now because she has recuperated and will be able to continue working as before, and this time she will be more careful. This is her second loan with MFP, and in all these years she has managed to increase her working capital and improve her financial situation. For this reason, she promises to be punctual in the repayment of her loan. Further, she likes to work with her community bank, since she learns a lot, such as how to improve her business. Jiovana will use the loan proceeds to buy 20 bags of natural fertilizer, which cost an average of 100 nuevos soles each. This will be used for her next planting of corn, which will take place in the next few months.
