A loan of $950 helped a member to buy farm inputs and pay for plowing.

Benkadi 1 Group's story

The members of the Benkadi 1 Group are married women with an average age of 35 and five children. They all live in polygamist families in Loutana, one of the villages of Sikasso, the 3rd administrative region of Mali. They have partnered with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their farming businesses during the rainy season. They are on their second loan cycle with the institution, after their last loan was repaid.

The crop they grow is sorghum. Kadiatou is pictured standing in the middle of the photo. With her loan, she intends to buy farm inputs and pay for plowing to maintain 1.5 hectares. After harvest, her produce is sold in the village and in the Sikasso market to male and female customers. She expects to make an average of 170,000 francs CFA per season. This income will allow her to pay off her loan and to help her husband with daily expenses.
