A loan of $5,650 helped a member to buy cosmetics.

Pro Fortaleza Group's story

The “Pro Fortaleza” (For Strength) communal bank will start its third cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Los Andes Focal Center. It has ten members led by a governing board headed by Yanina. The communal bank members carry out a variety of businesses among which we have instrument sales, cosmetics sales, school supplies and toys, sewing kits, Avon products sales, guitar and zampoña [type of pan flute] sales, crafts sales and salchipapas [fried potatoes with fried sausages] sales. The loan they’ll take out will benefit small micro businesses among which is Yanina’s. She indicates that she joined Pro Mujer five years ago having been invited by a girlfriend who is a member of the institution. She currently has a business selling cosmetics. She relates that she was attracted to this business because it’s easy and leaves her with time to tend to her family. The loan she’ll take out now is to buy merchandise. She will buy cosmetics along the Bolivia-Perú border and will resell it in the weekly street markets. This way of working allows her to generate resources to support her family because she’s single and has three children.
