Norma's story

Norma is 39 years old and lives in the city of Latacunga. Latacunga is the capital of Cotopaxi, a province located in the central Ecuadorian sierra.The climate is mild, with an average temperature of 12°C. The city is known for its beautiul surroundings in the Andean range and for being on the slopes of the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi, which has destroyed the city twice since it was founded. Latacunga has a very pleasant colonial style. It is also representative of Ecuadorian folklore, as it as its traditional festivals such as La Mama Negra that combines indigenous, Spanish and Afro-Ecuadorian traditions. Norma is divorced and lives alone with her children. Twenty five years ago, she started her street vendor business selling watches, clocks and batteries for these, with the help of her sister. She works more than eight hours a day to increase her income and be able to get her children ahead. Through the Fundación Alternativa, Norma is asking for a Kiva loan to be able to have her own watch/ clock shop to improve her quality of her services, offer better products and do all this in a more organized way. In thi that she s way, she will be able to grow her business. She wants to give her children a secondary and post-secondary education that she never had. With the loan, she will buy replacement parts and tools to work independently.
