Benkadi 1 Group's story

The ten members of the Benkadi 1 group are married women with an average age of 50 and an average of four children each. They live in polygamous families in Bablena, a village in the Kilidougou commune, Dioïla prefecture, Koulikoro region (2nd administrative region of Mali). They are working with the microfinance organization Soro Yiriwaso with the goal of better organizing their activities for the beginning of the rainy season. They cultivate millet, peanuts, and beans. They are on their sixth collaboration with the organization.

With this new loan, Salimata Souleymane, standing second from right, plans to buy fertilizers and small tools and to pay for labor costs to maintain approximately 0.75 hectares of millet and peanuts. After harvest the crops are sold in the town of Dioïla to a customer base of both men and women. She expects to make an average profit of about 110,000 CFA per growing season.
