Cruz Del Pilar's story

Cruz del Pilar lives with her husband and two children in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, located between the Ecuadorian coast and highlands. Santo Domingo has a humid tropical climate with an average temperature of 25.5°C. The city is the junction of various highways that pass through important cities such as Quito, Cuenca, and Esmeraldas, making Santo Domingo a key point for Ecuadorian trade. What's more, the city holds the majority of the country's livestock market. Santo Domingo is the home of the Tsáchilas, an ethnic group that maintains the language, clothing, and other traditions since before the colonial period. Cruz de Pilar is 57 years old and has cocoa planting business that she started 5 years ago. In spite of the long hours that she works and the help of her husband, her income is not sufficient to maintain two children, one of whom already attends school. Cruz de Pilar has a lot of experience on the topic, and still has faith that if she invests money and works hard her business will succeed. As a result, Cruz del Pilar is asking Kiva for a loan to be able to enlarge her plantation and produce more cocoa, increasing her sales and, as a result, her income. Cruz del Pilar knows that it won't be easy, but she wants to fight and succeed with her business for her two small children.
