A loan of $975 helped to buy 15 bags of fertilizer and pay the day laborers who will work on his land.

Nilson's story

Nilson is 35 years old and married to Rosita, with whom he has six children. This family lives in a simple little house located in the community of Chanchamayo.

He has been in agriculture ever since he was 17 years old, enough time that he is now experienced and has knowledge to work in the countryside. He has six parcels of land where he cultivates coffee, avocados, cacao, and plantains. He has just finished his coffee harvest with the final "scraping" which consists of finding and picking the last coffee beans off of the bushes, so now he needs bags of fertilizer to start a new planting. Meanwhile he's also working on growing his plantains and avocados. When all of his lands are seen to, he works as a day laborer on other people's plots of land. This gives him a steady stream of income for his family, as he also catches fish in the river and sells whatever he finds in the market. Nilson is a very hard wroker. These days he wants to start with the cleaning of his coffee plantation and for this he needs bags of fertilizer.

This is his third loan with MFP, and he is very thankful for the opportunity and the confidence that has been placed in him. He does not intend to fail, and he plans to make his payments on time. He is also an active and responsible member of his community banking group, "Sol Naciente" (the Rising Sun).

With the money that he is now asking for, he will be able to buy 15 bags of fertilizer, which cost 120 Soles apiece. The rest will be used to pay the laborers he will hire to do the cleaning and preparation of his fields.
