Uzima Group's story

Chantal is a member of the Uzima group and lives in Bujumbura. She is 48 years old and married to Ibraham, a driver. Together they have 8 children aged between 7 and 28, four of whom are in school. She has three children in her care who attend school; these are the members of her extended family. She has been running a restaurant and selling clothes, shoes, body oil, mosquito nets and handbags for 12 years. She is seeking her third loan from the micro-finance institution Turame. She is going to use the loan obtained from KIVA to increase her capital and buy a large quantity of food crops (beans, rice, palm oil, etc) for her restaurant as well as body oil, mosquito nets and shoes for resale so that she can earn more. In the coming years, she would like to build a house on her plot of land and see her children continue their studies.
