A loan of $600 helped a member to buy food and spices at wholesale to sell.

Five Sisters Unity Group's story

Meet the members of the “Five Sisters Unity” group from Koidu, a city in Eastern Sierra Leone (their loan officer, Edward, is on the left). They are all local entrepreneurs who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a 2,500,000 SLL loan that will break down to 500,000 SLL for each. With the help of this loan they will be able to expand their businesses, make more sales and consequently improve on their living conditions.

Fatmata is the leader of this group. The 32-year-old is married to a tailor, and they have four children. For the past five years Fatmata has sold rice, pepper, palm oil, salt, Maggi (used to give sauce a sweet taste), etc. With her share of this loan, she will buy the above-mentioned items at wholesale to add to her current stock.

In this group: Fatmata, Fatmata, Fea, Fanta, Aminata
