A loan of $5,400 helped a member to replace her old sewing machine and buy an overlock machine, an iron, and some nice quality fabric.

Hazhar's Group's story

Hazhar is a young Iraqi woman. She is 22 years old and married, with no children yet. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Hazhar is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home. Despite her young age, she has four years of experience with using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family. With her experience, she has been able to gain insight into her customers' needs and she would like to improve her business by offering her customers a greater variety of services. She would like to replace her old sewing machine and buy an overlock machine, an iron, and some nice quality fabric. To be able to make these purchases she now, took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
