A loan of $4,500 helped a member to buy an overlock sewing machine, an embroidery machine and some nice quality fabric.

Nwxsha's Group's story

Nwxsha is a 32 year old, married Iraqi woman, and a mother of three children. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Nwxsha is one of the many Iraqi woman working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

She has five years' experience with this business, and to improve it she took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq in the past year to replace her old sewing machine and buy a chair and table for her work area. Having successfully repaid the loan, she is now taking a new loan to buy an overlock sewing machine, an embroidery machine and some nice quality fabric to be able to offer her customers a variety of new designs and services.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor and therefore unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
