Jose Antonio's story

José Antonia lives in the city of Ibarra, capital of Imbabura province, located in the northern part of the Ecuadorian highlands. The city has 181,175 inhabitants and is the center for economic development in northern Ecuador.

The city has a unique wealth of culture and nature, so it is a very important tourist area of the country. The city is known for "helados de paila" (fruit sorbets), that because of their uniqueness retain the flavor of natural fruit. This has made them famous around the country. Ibarra is also known for a blackberry sweet called "arrope." The city's climate is sub-tropical, with a temperature that varies between 12°C and 32°C.

José Antonio is 62. He lives with his wife Zoila, 51, and his two children. In spite of only having finished primary school, he was apprenticed as a shoe-maker, and with his experience in the area, 40 years ago he opened his shop making footwear. Since then, he has worked every day of the week to keep his business going.

Because of the dedication he puts into his work, José has several customers, especially military academies. José Antonio has faith that his business can grow. However, he has had no luck getting credit to invest in it. Therefore he is applying to Kiva for a loan so that he can buy more raw material, produce more shoes and increase his income.

He plans to buy leather and shoe soles. In this way he will improve his family's quality of life and offer his children a better future.
