Marilu's story

Marilu is 42 years old. She lives in the home she inherited from her parents 18 years ago, which is in Yanamarca. There, she raised five children but now she only lives with two of them: Max and Axel.

She took advantage of the location of her house to sell gasoline, since it is right by a central road. She already has eight years experience and she has been able to beat the competition. However, this is not the job she dedicates the most time to; she also plants barley, beans, and potatoes. She has been doing so for 15 years on rented land as well as her own. She sells high-quality potatoes, separating the small and wrinkled ones. From those she removes, she uses the well-know "dry potato" process, which is typical in the region. "You have to remove that type of potato and then dry them for a few months, flatten them and serve them in various typical dishes. They contain a lot of protein." According to Marilu, she sells each sack for an average of 80 soles. Therefore, she wants to buy a large quantity of potatoes to complete this process before December, when it will cost more.

She belongs to the Corazón de Jesús communal bank and this is her sixth credit with MFP. She really likes the work she does for the association. She receives help from the other members, who watch out for each other. "At each meeting, we always handle the payments responsibly," she says.

Marilu will invest this money in buying 100 sacks of potatoes to complete this dry potato process.
