A loan of $575 helped to buy women's underwear.

Nerys's story

53-year-old Nerys lives with her husband and their two daughters, who are 17 and 25 years old, in Puerto Colombia. This is a beautiful tourist town on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. There, in an atmosphere of beach, [sea] breeze and sea, Nerys has a small business selling products through specialized guides. Her main line is women's underwear. Nerys' customers are in the town of Puerto Colombia and she sells to them on credit. They repay in installments which are arranged according to their ability to pay. Nerys' husband works as a fireman in the city of Barranquilla. He also sells fire extinguishers and offers a service upgrading them for different companies. As he knows many people who work as employees in these companies, he refers them to his wife and he has gradually managed to bring new customers to her business. On weekends, Nerys has another business preparing and selling chicken and/or pork and/or three-meat 'hayacas' which she sells to her neighbors. From Monday to Friday she works in a 'hogar de bienestar familiar' (a community childcare center sponsored by the State), gives classes to breastfeeding mothers and gives talks on women's reproductive health. She feels very happy with all of the activities she is involved in and describes herself as a lover of social work. She is currently applying for a Kiva loan (her first loan from Fundación Mario Santo Domingo) which she will use to buy women's underwear. This will enable her to make the most of some special discounts that are available in her catalogs. She would like to continue surprising her customers in order to gain their loyalty.
