Gemma is from Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur. She is 43 years old, married and has three school-age children. Her husband is a farmer. Her husband cultivates their rice farm.
Gemma owns and operates a business venture in the agricultural sector, raising and harvesting rice for sale. Gemma sells her harvest rice commercially.
Gemma has been in this business for 22 years and earns approximately 25,300 PHP per month. This is the primary source of income for the family.
She came to the GDMPC office and requested a loan of 50,000 PHP to purchase fertilizer and seedlings. Fertilizer is used for the good growth of the rice, so that when it is matured, there is a good-quality harvest. Gemma plans that her returns will be re-invested back into the business and to double the income she receives, and to buy more land to cultivate.
Gata Daku Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GDMPC) was founded in 1992 by 32 farmer-members to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities and other support services. Today, it has over 15,000 members located in upland, lowland and coastal regions of the Philippines, and offers credit, savings, education, and various social services.
