A loan of $875 helped to convert her conventional coffee farm into an organic coffee farm.

Rosario's story

Rosario and her husband, Baldomero, have been farming coffee for more than 10 years. Together with their 5 children they work on their farms, clearing and preparing the land so that they can plant and later harvest. Rosario is also in charge of the household chores, and her husband takes on seasonal work with other people so that they can have extra income for the family. They produce conventional coffee, and they want to change to organic coffee. With organic coffee they can get a better price, and it doesn't damage the environment because it avoids the use of fertilizers and other chemical products. To do this, it will be necessary for them to put in new plants and take a class so that they can take maximum advantage of their resources. This is the reason that they are requesting a loan. They know that if they carry out this plan they will have more income. They will use the extra income to send their children to school, because in the community where they live there are not many options as far as education is concerned.
