Estrellas Group's story

This community bank is called 'Estrellas' (Stars). It is made up of 21 entrepreneurs who work in commerce selling clothing, running a grocery store, making confectionery, hair dressing, making knitted goods, making sports clothing, providing a photocopying and binding service, etc. They are all from the city of Talca.

Rosa is the treasurer of this community bank. In the photo, she can be seen standing in the second row, third from the left. She is wearing a red sweater and has short hair.

Rosa has been selling a variety of merchandise and offering cell phone top ups for three months. She says that she works alone, from Monday to Sunday. Her work hours depend upon her availability as her business is located in her home and her customers come to visit her until very late in the evening looking for cell phone top ups. This makes her happy because she is making income for her household.

Rosa buys the merchandise and supplies that she needs for her business in the city of Santiago at low cost. This is financially convenient for her.

Rosa will use her loan to buy school supplies, specifically paints, colored pencils, notebooks, correction fluid, etc.

Rosa's business goals are to stock up with a lot more merchandise and to grow her business so that she can make more income. This will enable her to enjoy a better quality of life.

Rosa lives together with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and 3-year-old granddaughter. Her dreams for her work are to expand her business and to stock it with a lot of products for her customers. This will enable her to provide her family with a better quality of life.

Rosa is very happy and grateful for the loan and other services provided by Fondo Esperanza. She also says that she feels very comfortable with her community bank and the meetings they attend because there is a lot of generosity and unity.

Talca is located in Maule region, in the central area of the country. It is the administrative, financial and cultural center of the region, being the most important city in the Chilean Central Valley. There is a strange reference to Talca in Chile in a phrase which goes 'Talca, Paris and London'. There are a number of myths surrounding this phrase. Some say that it comes from something an Englishman once said ("Talca parece Londres" - "Talca is like London") owing to the fog that frequently covers the city during the winter season, just as it does in the UK capital.
