Cirilo Marcelo's story

Cirilo was born in Colombia in 1968, but currently resides in Rio Verde parish in the city of Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo has a humid tropical climate with temperatures varying from 18°C to nearly 38°C. Santo Domingo is the ancestral home of the Tsáchilas, which is an ethnic group that has been living in this place since before the colonial era, and still maintains traditions such as their mode of dress and their beliefs. The city is located between the mountains and the coast. It plays an important role, as its location makes it the link between several Ecuadorian cities, making Santo Domingo an indispensable location for Ecuadorian commerce. Furthermore, Santo Domingo encompasses the majority of the livestock market in Ecuador. Cirilo is single, and has two children: a six-year-old and an 8-year-old. He works more than eight hours a day in his business raising and selling chickens, that he set up three years ago. He already has several years experience in this work, as he learned it from previous jobs. Cirilo is requesting a loan from Kiva to expand his business by increasing the number of chickens. This is something he can do because of the fact that his installed capacity allows it, as the chicken farm can accommodate more chickens. By increasing the earnings from his business, he will improve his income and living conditions. In this way, Cirilo will be able to provide his two children with a better quality of life and give the best to his family.
