A loan of $4,800 helped a member to replace her sewing machine and buy fabrics and raw materials.

Nian's Group's story

Nian is a 29-year-old Iraqi woman. She is married and has three children. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Nian is one of the many Iraqi woman who works from home, using her sewing skills to generate income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

Nian has seven years of experience building her sewing/tailoring business. She constantly strives to improve her services and opportunities.

In the past, Nian qualified for and successfully repaid a Relief International micro-finance loan, which she used to purchase a sewing machine and some small furniture items for her work area. She would now like to replace her sewing machine and buy some fabrics and raw materials. To make these purchases, she is requesting another loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor and apply for a loan as individuals. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
