Luwero, Uganda / General Store

A loan of $1,025 helped to buy more essential commodities like milk, bread, sugar, and soap for resale.

Mary's story

Mary is 31 years old and lives in the town of Luwero in the Luwero region of Uganda. She is married and has five children, with three of them currently in school. For the past six years, Mary has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells sugar and soap.

To help expand her business, Mary has requested a loan of 2,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more essential commodities like milk, bread, sugar, and soap for resale, and will help Mary to generate greater profits and improve her standard of living. Mary hopes that in the future she will be able to stock more items for her clients.

Mary is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Mary who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
