A loan of $450 helped to introduce cochineal bugs in his prickly pear cactus plantation.

Richard Pierre's story

Richard is a 42 year old man, he lives in the city of Nazca with his partner and their 3 children. During his spare time, he like watching educational programs and newsreels on the television and he sometimes prepares one of his favorite dishes, such as the delicious Carapulcra.

Richard has always been a very enterprising man who has worked from a very young age. He completed secondary school education, but unfortunately due to a lack of financial resources he was unable to pursue a university course, although he would have liked to have studied Agriculture.

Thanks to his enthusiasm and the support of his family, Richard rented a small plot of land to start his business growing prickly pear cacti to rear cochineal bugs. He works approximately 10 hours a day and he feels very much at home with his business as he has always been interested in the countryside and the work he carries out there.

Richard is extremely grateful to the Kiva loan lenders, as it is thanks to the help given that he will be able to introduce the cochineal bugs to his whole prickly pear cactus plantation. In that way, he will be able to make the most of the season and obtain a large volume of cochineal bugs. Once the harvest is completed, he will be able to gain good profits from the sales, in this manner enabling Richard to achieve his dream little by little of having his own farm and enabling his children to be good professionals and good people.
