A loan of $475 helped to prepare her field and buy supplies for her next crop.

Rosario's story

Dona Rosario is from San Lorenzo-Teustepe. She is married and has 9 grown children, all living away from their mother's house. Dona Rosario is a farmer. She has grown rice for 5 years. She raised and sold animals before but her earnings were too meager to continue and she switched to rice farming when she saw that it was more profitable. She sells to people in her community because she knows them and because her selling costs are less since she doesn't have to transport her crop to another town. Her children help her on the farm. Dona Rosario says that she wants to continue the business and focus on good-quality products. She is applying for a loan that she will use to prepare her fields and buy the supplies she needs--fertilizers, manure, etc.--to ensure a good yield from her next crop. For the future, she wants to buy cattle that she raise and sell for extra income. Her immediate plan is to plant 2 tracts of rice and use the income to pay off this loan. She is grateful to Kiva lenders for their support because they have made it possible for her to build her business and make a better life.
