A loan of $600 helped a member to purchase more soft drinks to sell.

Jamilla's Group's story

Jamilla's group is comprised of three hard-working women. Jamilla is 22 years old, single, and has two children who attend school. She lives in the town of Kamwenge in the Fort portal region of Uganda. For the past year, Jamilla has been working hard to manage her small business, which sells soft drinks.

To help expand her business, Jamilla is requesting a loan for 450,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more soft drinks to sell and will help Jamilla to generate greater profits and pay school fees for her children. Jamilla hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land.

Jamilla is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training. The ELA program has increased Jamilla's future prospects by helping her to learn how to save money.
