A loan of $700 helped to buy perfumes, creams, cosmetics and wood.

Lucy Patricia's story

Every two weeks, the members of the 'Plazoleta Eloy Alfaro' community bank meet in '30 de Septiembre' neighborhood, in Rocafuerte canton. This area is known for the delicious sweet treats that are prepared by the locals. They are well known throughout the country.

This is where we get to know Lucy. Lucy is 41 years old, married, and has four children who are 19, 18, 16 and 5 years old. Her two eldest hope to start university this year and the others are in high school and elementary school. They all still live with her. Her husband has a furniture workshop.

Our friend is a housewife who, in order to make her own money and help her husband with the household expenses, sells Avon products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes and ladies' accessories). She works three days a week, for two to three hours a day. She leaves her products with her customers on credit and collects payment once a week. She has been in this business for four years and it is doing very well. She tells us that her husband will use some of the loan money for his furniture workshop. He will buy raw materials that he uses in making his furniture and everything else he makes from wood.

Lucy will use this loan to buy perfumes, cream, cosmetics and wood. This is her fourth loan cycle as a member of this community bank and she likes it because the repayments are easy to make.

Lucy's dream is to have a boutique.
