Asunta's story

Asunta is 50 years old and was born in the city of Paucartambo, in Cusco department. (Paucartambo is three hours from the city of Cusco). Asunta currently lives in the city of Calca. She is married and has three children from her marriage. (The city of Calca is noted for its beautiful countryside and for the fact that tourism, livestock raising and farming are common in this area). Asunta is a member of Asociación Arariwa's "Clorinda Matto de Turner" community bank.

Asunta's business is buying and selling corn. She buys corn from different places such as Calca, Urubamba and Lares. She uses the corn to make 'jora' (malted corn) to sell to her neighbors or fellow group members whose main business activity is making 'chicha de jora' (a corn-based drink). She has been in this business for 15 years and is doing very well thanks to the determination with which she carries out her work. On this occasion, Asunta needs her loan to buy corn. She is a hard-working woman whose dream is to help her children become professionals.
