Laura Ligia's story

Laura is both mother and father to her son, Mateo. They live in the Nanegalito Parish, located in the capital city of Ecuador, Quito. Quito is in the Andes Mountains, at 2,800 meters above sea leve, making it the third highest capital in the world. In 1978, Quito was desginated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of how it combines nature and infrastructure in a unique way in its category. Quito is divided into three parts: the Historical Center which is Colonial Quito, the North, where the upper classes live and the South, known as "the poor side" of the city.

Laura raises and sells animals, and takes care of her five-year-old son. She began her business three years ago and, although she spends eight hours a day working hard to get ahead, she does not have enough income to give her son, Mateo, a decent lifestyle. Laura is determined to provide for her son and she is confident that if she invests in her business, she will be able to do it. Therefore she has requested a loan through Kiva to increase the number of animals she raises and improve sales. This will allow her to earn more for the family in her struggle to provide a better future for her son.
