A loan of $375 helped to buy bags of organic fertilizer.

Maria's story

María, 32, has two children: Priscila, 13, and Brandon, 10. She lives with her husband and children in a rented house in the farm district of La Unión, Leticia.

For 14 years she has been working in the fields alongside her husband, and together they provide for the family. Over the years she has learned how to grow carrots, peas, lima beans, potatoes, corn and other vegetables. She says the crop that gives her the most satisfaction is the pea, since a bag of seeds costing 550 PEN produces 60 sacks that she sells for 120 PEN each. That is in the high season, because there are months when the prices gow down, but María compensates this by selling other products. This trade allows her to give her children a good quality of life with all the basic needs taken care of. Her goal is to improve and increase her vegetable production, taking advantage of the fertile soil where she lives. She also wants to rent more land.

This is her second loan through MFP, and she is committed to paying it back on time. She belongs to the communal bank "La Unión hace la fuerza", and says her colleagues are supportive people so she is happy to be a member.

She will use the loan to buy bags of organic fertilizer for her pea and potato crops.
