Sorie Thomas' Group's story

Pictured above are teachers from a primary school in Binkolo, a village near Makeni city in northern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org based in Makeni, to request a loan of 10,300,000.00 Sierra Leonean leones (SLL) for the entire group. With the help of this loan, they will be able to buy or invest in things that their salaries alone do not allow. At the end of each month, these teachers repay SMT/Kiva lenders from their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for doing the salary deductions and making the repayments on their behalf.

Sorie, who is pictured in the middle, is the leader of this group. Sorie is forty-eight years old. He is a native of Kapethe village, in northern Sierra Leone. He is married to a teacher and the couple has five children together who are attending primary and secondary schools. Sorie has been in the teaching profession for twenty-eight years now. He wants this loan to buy building materials like cement and corrugated iron sheets for the construction of a house.
