A loan of $1,300 helped to buy piglets.

Alex Marcelo's story

Puerto Quito is a city and urban parish in Pichincha Province, Ecuador. The city is in the process of growth resulting from ecotourism in the area. The main attraction is "La Cascada Azul" (The Blue Waterfall), which is located 140 kilometers from the capital of Quito.

Despite its geographical location in the Ecuadorian mountains, Puerto Quito has a climate and topography that is very similar to the coastal regions. Since it is located in a tropical rain forest, the highest temperatures in the province reach approximately 25°C. All of these conditions are favorable for Alex, age 23, who devotes his time to farming and raising pigs. Four years ago, he decided to start a business since his parents taught him this line of work.

Alex lives with his mother and his two-year-old son. His work day begins very early. While his mother spends her time as a homemaker, Alex works seven hours each day on his property. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer with his son. He strives each day to help his family move forward. The most difficult part of his job is cleaning the areas where the pigs are housed because he must perform all of the work by himself. He hopes to increase the number of animals on his property so that he can improve his income. Alex dreams of expanding his business and having his own enterprise. His only inspiration is the happiness of his son, for whom he tries to provide the very best.
