A loan of $1,200 helped to buy stock merchandise for her store.

Teresa De Jesús's story

The “Los Tres Ángeles” (The Three Angels) communal bank meets every fifteen days in Montecristi Canton known for its rich pre-colonial culture and its crafts that are known nationally and internationally; it’s where the famous straw hats come from.

We met Teresa, 40, here. She’s single living in her parents’ house. She’s been in the communal bank since its beginning and likes it because the bank has given her great help with the loans to get ahead.

Our friend has a store in her parents’ house where besides selling products like rice, sugar, oil, detergent also sells ice-cream, sodas and certain medicines. She works every day from 6am until 10pm. She tells us that she’s been in business 19 years and thanks to the loans has gradually increased in until having the well-stocked store she currently has.

She will use this loan to better stock her store. She will buy rice, sugar, oil, detergent, cured meats and other basic staple items. Her goal is to own a car.
