Cosme Vinicio's story

San Miguel de los Bancos (also known as ‘Los Bancos’) is a canton in the province of Pichincha in Ecuador. The climate in the canton is subtropical due to its moderately high altitude, in contrast to the climate of the province’s highlands between the Western and Central Cordilleras. The canton is divided into two parishes: the urban parish of San Miguel de los Bancos and the rural parish of Mindo. As in the other cantons in Pichincha province, the economy of Los Bancos is mainly agricultural, and is mostly based on raising livestock. However, there has recently been considerable growth in ecotourism, especially in Mindo.

Vinicio is a resident of this beautiful canton. He is a 41-year-old entrepreneur who has spent his life working in the field and feels very much at home there. Vinicio is a native of Loja, but he decided to come to Los Bancos a little over 15 years ago to start his cattle business. He lives alone, and has an 18-year-old son who no longer lives with him. Vinicio works on his land about 12 hours a day caring for his cattle and maintaining his property. In his free time he enjoys playing sports to stay healthy; he also enjoys going out in the surrounding area and admiring the beauty of the ecosystem and the vegetation there. Vinicio is requesting a loan from Fundación Alternativa, an institution that manages funds from Kiva and provides them to local entrepreneurs. Vinicio’s goal is to increase the number of cattle he has on his property and thus increase his agricultural production.
