A loan of $850 helped to buy a computer to use as a tool for teaching mathematics to children, to whom she offers tutoring services.

Greisy Estela's story

Greisy is 29 years old, and is married with three children. She lives in the neighborhood of San Fernando in the city of Cartagena, and for the past three years she has offered academic tutoring. She teaches out of her home, and also teaches in the homes of students of low socioeconomic status. She helps them with their school homework and helps to reinforce what the children are learning in school. She has approached the Mario Santo Domingo foundation, seeking her first Kiva loan in order to purchase a computer. For teaching mathematics, she needs to use software that will allow her to develop educational activities that are engaging and interactive. Greisy, like the well-known philosopher Immanuel Kant, is convinced that "a man is merely what education makes of him." She has always been concerned about teaching children well so that they will be able to continue to learn and be successful in the future. It is for this reason that she wishes to change careers and attain a higher level of education so that she can work as a full-time school teacher. She also wants to have her own home so that she can provide a better life to her family.
