Judite's story

Judite is 51- years-old and originally from Namaacha, a village bordering Swaziland. She is married for the second time and has 3 children that live with her and go to school.

In 1976 she married for the first time, had 2 children, but got divorced in 1990 because her husband was beating her too much. In 1992 she married her second husband and had another child. Judite convinced her husband to buy a house in Namaacha and go back to the countryside. In 1994 they started raising chicken with an indemnity her husband received after getting fired.

In 1996, Judite was motivated by her friends to start working with plants, flowers and vases. She had a beautiful house and loved gardening, so her plants where extremely well cared for and attracted a lot of attention. Today she is one of the most well know gardeners of the district, selling to people living even in Maputo. She makes around MTn 10,000 per month with the sales of plants and flowers. She also does cement vases, but the business is more uncertain. Each vase is sold between MTn 500 and MTn 1,500, but mainly she produces under requests. Now she is doing 6 vases for the local Catholic Church, each at MTn 1,000. Judite has 5 permanent employees to help in the business.

After hearing about Hluvuku while chitchatting with a friend, she decided to ask for a loan of MTn 25,000 to expand the plant and flower business, and to buy more seeds and other products that are needed.
